Hi There!

My name is Sydney Bauer and I own and run Apex Academics. I am a full time PhD Student and have years of experience teaching and advising college students. I am so excited to help you succeed on your academic path!

My Story

In the Fall of 2024, I started as a first year PhD Student at UNC Chapel Hill in the department of Art History. I received my MA in Art History at Columbia University and my BA in Art History from George Washington University...so it's safe to say I am VERY familiar with the application process!

Before starting my PhD, I taught for three years at a liberal arts college in Upstate NY, where I worked with students from all different backgrounds. I also worked closely with admissions teams and advised students on their own applications to graduate school. I have led many workshops on crafting resumes, cover letters, and personal essays- as well as general professional and academic development.  I love connecting with students and finding ways for them to thrive.

Why Working With Me Is Different

- I specialize in developing academic strategies that are unique to every individual. Working with me is not just about addressing the assignment at hand, it's also about building a foundation for your learning and developing skills to help you approach your studies in a way that works best for you. Whether this includes unique approaches to time management, note-taking, or study skills, I am committed to helping students find ways to become independent learners.

- While most tutors and college counselors have an overwhelming number of students to keep track of, I only take a limited number of students in order to focus on highly personalized and exceptional support. This helps me build an individualized plan for each client’s specific needs.

- I'm a student too! I understand the unique frustrations and concerns that learners have when grasping new concepts or starting projects and applications. I too still struggle with lack of focus and other common issues that students contend with inside and outside the classroom. My position as a student gives me some special insight into tutoring and I am always learning new ways to approach my own studies.

- I have been through the college application process myself  (for my BA, MA, and PhD!) and initially found it to be very intimidating. As a first generation college student, I was overwhelmed when applying to undergraduate schools and ended up at a school that, although my first choice, did not fit my academic or social needs.  I want to make the process easier for students so that they can focus on achieving their goals, while also finding the right fit that can support them academically, professionally, and beyond.
